Check It Out: Enjoy spirit-filled reads just in time for Halloween

Are you a fan of spooky stories? Haunted houses? Ghostly sightings? Halloween comes and goes like a jack-o’-lantern flash, but the spirit of Halloween can linger as long as you like with a little help from spirit-filled reads.

Personally, I hope I never run into (or through?) a ghost — not even a friendly one. I possess a healthy skepticism about the existence of specters, but I also don’t want to anger potential residents from the “other side” and find myself possessed, literally. Therefore, I give myself permission to consider the possibility that apparitions live among us (covering all of my bases, ghost-wise, if you know what I mean).

This week’s reading list will do many things: showcase cursed destinations; teach would-be ghost hunters the tricks of the trade; offer insider information into ghostly encounters; and explore the scariest of scary things — haunted bookstores and libraries. Is the hair on the back of your neck standing up yet? Muwahaha!

Do you know what’s really spooky? 2023 is quickly coming to an end. So, grab some books and read while you can — 2024 is just around the corner.

  • “Atlas of Cursed Places: A Travel Guide to Dangerous and Frightful Destinations” by Olivier Le Carrer.
  • “Celebrity Ghosts and Notorious Hauntings” by Marie D. Jones.
  • “The Everything Ghost Hunting Book: Tips, Tools, and Techniques for Exploring the Supernatural World” by Melissa Martin Ellis.
  • “Ghost Hunters: True Stories from the World’s Most Famous Demonologists” by Ed Warren.
  • “Life with the Afterlife: 13 Truths I Learned About Ghosts” by Amy Bruni.
  • “Tomes of Terror: Haunted Bookstores and Libraries” by Mark Leslie.
