Alexander Mendez rushed for 179 yards and three touchdowns for Othello as Kelso was unable to keep with the 2A Huskies on the road in a 42-24 loss.
Kelso played without starting quarterback Tucker Amrine. Anders Dahl passed for 56 yards in his place.
After Othello took a 20-3 halftime lead, Kelso was not able to get any closer than 26-18 on Aden Mintonye’s 16-yard touchdown run with 3:18 left in the third quarter.
Othello quickly took a 34-18 lead on Mendez’s second touchdown run, which came 16 seconds later.
Mendez would add his third touchdown run early in the fourth to help seal the win.
Kelso hosts Evergreen next week, needing a win over the Plainsmen to potentially force a three-way tiebreaker for second place in the 3A Greater St. Helens League.
