Weather Eye: Sunshine, mild temperatures today and Friday

Can you believe the nice weather on Wednesday? I count every day from here on out through the winter as a bonus when we have sunshine and mild temperatures. Of course, we began the daylight hours with fog and low clouds, which is most typical this time of the year. Soon when we have clear skies and light winds overnight, the fog that forms may or may not clear at all during the day. That’s ahead next month and beyond.

Today we enjoy another “bonus” and again on Friday. We trade that for clouds and unsettled weather on Sunday well into next week.

The air mass will be cooling and precipitation that falls next week will fall as snow in the higher ski areas and some forecast models indicate snow may fall to Cascade pass levels. Another taste of winter.

Highs will fall from the 60s this weekend into the 50s next week. October is always trick-or-treat weather and offers its usual antics as it pleases. November is waiting in the wings and will be soon upon us. Where does time go, my friends? I watch the weather out my window and time flies.

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Vancouver had a high of 71 degrees, some 7 degrees above average. When was our last 80-degree day? Remember that? Read on. The record high for Wednesday was 81 degrees in 1940 and today’s record is 79 degrees in 1978. Friday it reached 80 degrees in 1938. No records this go around.

I was checking Vancouver’s rainfall since the first of September, and it stands at 3.12 inches, which by the way is right about normal. Up on the Olympic Peninsula, one location about 30 miles southwest of Sequim has nearly 24 inches of rain. Sequim only measured 0.56 of an inch. I know a couple of retirees and why they live there!

OK, the last 80-degree high was Oct. 8 and the warmest this month was 86 degrees on Oct. 6. Keep those in your memories as we wait until next spring for an 80-degree day.

Return here on Saturday and I’ll share some weather news with you. Take care.
