Weather Eye: As skies clear, beautiful weather will grace us this week

The weekend was not too bad with only some light scattered showers here and there. Temperatures were balmy for mid-October. Many made the trek to the pumpkin patch, I’m sure.

We have an October treat in store with beautiful weather the rest of the week. Skies will slowly clear later today after some morning low clouds and fog. Afternoon temperatures will move into the 70s, which will be 10 degrees or more above average. Record highs this week are in the upper 70s.

We had a weak cold front move through early Monday which left less than a tenth of an inch in Vancouver in the morning hours, but heavy downpours followed a few hours later and dumped between a third of an inch and 1 inch around 3 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Portland issued a tornado warning shortly before 3 p.m., ending at 3:15 p.m.

The radar showed some increased velocity in the winds aloft moving over northeast Hazel Dell on to the Five Corners area. I see reports in those areas of water a foot deep in some parking lots and nearly 1 inch of rain falling in only minutes.

A little unexpected weather action, I guess. The only adverse weather today may be the dense ground fog. October is still running way above average with our temperatures and is in the top 10 warmest of October weather so far. Highs in the 70s Wednesday through Friday will increase those statistics. With the lack of a cold air mass following Monday’s weather system, our overnight lows will be mild.

The next rain on the horizon would be this weekend as it looks now but the fine details are yet to appear as far as intensity. It does look much cooler ahead with lowering snow levels possible next week. The rain on Monday did push us above average for the month. That is an accomplishment.

I’ll share last month’s rainfall from your friends and neighbors later this week and update you on the woolly bears. So far, a mild winter may be in the offing. Take good care and we’ll chat on Thursday.
