LONGVIEW — Cowlitz County Public Works is collecting materials like old paint, pesticides and aerosol cans Oct. 28 in the Woodland Safeway parking lot to help keep homes free of hazardous products.

Residents of Cowlitz and Wahkiakum counties can dispose of household hazardous materials, like antifreeze, pool chemicals and paint thinners, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the eastern side of the parking lot at 1725 Pacific Ave., Woodland.

Materials not accepted at the event include empty paint cans, leaking containers, containers larger than 5 gallons or 50 pounds, explosives, radioactive material, or biological and infectious waste, according to a county press release. Products also cannot come from places like businesses and churches; materials can only come from homes.

Organizers ask people to keep products in original containers, and to limit the total volume to 25 gallons or 200 pounds.

This collection event is sponsored by Cowlitz County in conjunction with Washington State Department of Ecology.

There is also a permanent collection facility for household hazardous waste open 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday and Saturday at the Waste Control Transfer Station, 1150 Third Ave. in Longview.
