Weather Eye: Chance of rain before weather warms for weekend

The first day of October on Sunday was superb with sunny skies after some early morning low temperatures around the county. Vancouver had a low of 42 degrees, well below average, while rural areas were in the 30s with plenty of frost in the Yacolt area at 32 degrees.

Clouds increased Monday and of course rain quickly followed. As of 5 p.m. nearly one quarter of an inch had fallen in Vancouver. A few scattered showers today are possible. Wednesday we begin the warming and drying trend expected by forecast models. We should enjoy 75 to 80 degrees Thursday through Sunday. Be sure and get outside chores accomplished during this dry period as more unsettled and damp weather may follow early next week.

Since it is October, I would recommend thinking about taking the kiddos to the local pumpkin patches. Soil should be dry, not muddy. It may fare worse later in the month as more rain will be on the way.

With the sunny warm weather later this week, we will also see some east winds developing for a couple of days. Humidity will drop and things will dry out. With fewer hours of daylight, chlorophyll production is nigh, and the leaves will be changing into their brilliant fall colors. Some have changed already due to the extreme dryness of the summer months.

I see where Barrow, Alaska, had their first snow cover a couple of days ago, so winter has begun in the far north. Some birds have been seen locally migrating southward and the animals in the nature realm are quite busy storing food for the long winter months.

Don’t you love autumn? The change of seasons and weather brings solace to the soul. A time of reflection and a time of rest from busy summer activities. It also signals the upcoming holiday season and weather watchers looking at the nighttime skies for those elusive low elevation snowflakes.
