Letter: Elks assist veterans

By Leonard Mills, Vancouver

Since its inception, the B.P.O. Elks have been incredibly patriotic. The order proudly displays our nation’s flag whenever and wherever possible. Its support of our military is exceptionally robust. As the homeless situation in our nation grows, especially among our veterans, the Elks have taken steps to give those who served a hand up.

Millions have been spent in support of our veterans in VA homes and establishments through our involvement in the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service program, but here in Clark County, those in need are gladly provided even more support. Through mentoring by various organizations, especially the VA, Housing and Urban Development, Transition Projects and the Clark County Veterans Assistance Center to just name a few, veterans moving from the street are provided at no cost to what is called by the Elks a “Welcome Home Kit.”

The kit contains a custom list of household items, allowing the veteran to set up housekeeping in what becomes permanent housing.

The Elks in the Clark County area, over the past four years, has provided over 525 such kits with an average cost of $300 each to these deserving veterans. The expense is solely borne through donations; no tax or other charitable funds are used.
