Recently, while watching a TV show on the dishonestly named FreeVee channel (a rant for another day), we were assaulted by repeated commercials for something called the “Surge Gel Blaster.” The scenario showed people on a mock battlefield shooting rapid-fire “gels” (imitation bullets) at other people who were running, dodging and hiding behind walls.
Like their deadly counterparts, these “Surges” have a huge magazine capacity. In other words, it was a simulation of a school shooting with an assault weapon. “Does it hurt?” the commercial asks. “Maybe a little, but that’s what makes it so much fun!”
Here’s my question:
Do we really want gut-wrenching, people-destroying violence depicted as a harmless game? Do we want to do something about the “guns are fun” culture that has devastated so many families? Or do we just want to stand by and wait for some gun lobby-financed politico to once again offer “thoughts and prayers” after the next massacre?
No matter what they try to tell you, it is the guns.
