Letter: Freight railroad is best alternative

By Michael E. McGinley, Washougal

After seeing Ms. Brock’s letter arguing against the expansion of railroad services to include a rock quarry (“Cancel freight railroad plans,” Our Readers’ Views, Nov. 14), I must ask those objecting: What plan do you have to transport rock products? More trucks? Or do you wish to forego the constructive use of rock products including paving roads, building foundations, and constructing homes, businesses, and other infrastructure?

Railroad transport, especially using existing rights of way, is almost always the least harmful and most efficient option. I offer this opinion based on a 40-year career as a railroad civil engineer.

After several weeks of reading these complaints I am certainly looking forward to some constructive suggestions on how best to haul rock products.
