Weather Eye: Rain slacks off for bit but few inches may fall by Sunday

November arrived in style with increasing clouds and rain commencing in the afternoon hours in time for the evening rush hour. I expect we had some heavy rain overnight as a moisture-laden train from the southwest was aimed right at us. OK, pineapple express or atmospheric river whichever you feel comfortable with.

I guess I am old school and prefer pineapple express, it adds some jest describing a moderate or heavy rain event. You’ll certainly notice the warm air mass associated with the moisture with daytime temperatures in the low 60s. The rain slacks off later today and on Friday we may enjoy a mostly dry day with once again balmy temperatures. Good opportunity to clear out the leaves from the yard and gutters.

However, another rainstorm arrives later Friday evening and overnight with another good dose originating in the southwest Pacific waters. We could see a couple of inches of rain through Sunday. Unsettled weather continues next week with rainy periods off and on and a westerly flow of moisture. Temperatures will drop below 60 degrees into the upper 50s, about normal for early November.

All that fresh snow that fell in the mountains down to some low elevations last week will be ushered off the slopes with several inches of warm rains. We will have to wait again for a colder air mass to begin the snowpack. And so it goes this time of the year. We may begin to have snow falling in the ski areas in mid-month, about two weeks out.

October’s weather in Vancouver was warmer than normal and drier than normal. Total rainfall was 2.56 inches compared to an average of 3.41 inches. The average mean temperature was 56.4 degrees, 2.2 degrees about the normal of 54.2 degrees. That continues the warmer and drier monthly pattern we have seen often this year.

We had clear skies Saturday evening for the full hunter’s moon and an amazing red and orange sunrise on the last day of October. A Halloween sunrise, not so spooky. Any errands to be done or just out and about, Friday will be the best day in the next five days. Take good care.
