After looking at all the forecast charts and maps Saturday afternoon, I sat back in my chair, looked out the window with rays of sunshine coming through and chuckled to myself. Well, maybe it was audible, as my little Yorkshire terrier raised her head from her nap and stared at me.
Feeling that warm sunshine at the windowpane reminded me that everything is going to be fine.
Sure, we had a little downturn in the weather, with a few replays of April’s chill and dampness, but there is hope on the horizon.
We will endure cool weather and a chance of showers through Monday, and then high pressure will build inland. We should begin things sunny side up on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, we’ll rise above our normal seasonal high temperatures, and by the end of the week, we’ll be back in 80-degree-plus weather.
Mother’s Day looks good at this point.
As of Saturday afternoon, I see Vancouver has had only two days so far this month with high temperatures at or above average: It was 67 degrees on May 2 and 73 degrees on May 4.
I have received several emails asking what I thought the summer would bring us. Some folks are concerned after the cold weather that we may have a sweltering summer.
Of course, accurately predicting weather weeks or months out is impossible. However, government officials are predicting warmer and drier weather in May, June and July. For that to happen, we need these bouts of colder air from the Gulf of Alaska to stay at bay. Time will tell.
If you remember last year at this time, I was writing about how cool and wet the first week of May had been. Many local observers had received more than 2 inches of rain over that time span.
We enjoy some humor with our sometimes-dismal weather reports. Weather observer Murphy Dennis up on Rawson Road — which got nearly 2 inches of rain — said about the soggy first week of last May, “The nightcrawlers brought out their life vests.” Can you picture that? I’m still chuckling.
Have a good week, everyone.
