My mom made most of my clothes when I was growing up. I loved looking at the collection of notions in her sewing room — especially the buttons. She repurposed a metal cookie tin to hold all of her loose buttons, and I played with them a lot when I was a little girl. Unfortunately, I never caught the sewing bug, so my closet is full of store-bought clothing. But I still like buttons.
March celebrates National Button Week — another event I had no idea existed. I’m all for it, though, as I think buttons are pretty darn special. A button is cute as a button, in my honest opinion. While we don’t have many button-themed books in the collection, I did find a few gems to share with you today. Both kids and adults can read about buttons whether you want to use them in a project or just enjoy a story or two involving the cutest accessory ever. Do I have a button bias? Yes. Yes, I do.
- “The Button Book” written by Sally Nichols, illustrated by Bethan Woollvin. One of the best things about buttons is that some of them are superfun to press. In this cute picture book, a button might sing or another one might make you sleepy. You have to press them all to discover their button-ish delights!
- “Button Lover’s Jewelry” by Lisa Lancaster. Is a button still a button if it becomes an earring or part of a bracelet? Of course! No need to button up your joy in this button-happy craft book.
- “The Good for Nothing Button!” written and illustrated by Charise Mericle Harper. Part of the “Mo Willems’ Elephant & Piggie Like Reading!” series, this beginning reader tells the story of Yellow Bird who finds a button and wants to share it with Red Bird and Blue Bird. It turns out that an ordinary button is anything but ordinary in this charming tale.
- “How to Make Beautiful Buttons” by Beate Schmitz. The title says it all: learn how to make beautiful buttons.
- “Making Adorable Button-Jointed Stuffed Animals: 20 Step-By-Step Patterns to Create Posable Arms and Legs on Toys Made with Recycled Wool” by Ruth Rebecca Anderson. If “adorable button-jointed stuffed animals” doesn’t bring a smile to you face, you might not be a button fan. That’s OK. But for everyone who loves a sweet button-jointed stuffed animal, please get your hands on this fun craft book.
