A Vancouver man was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison in Oregon for killing his 2-year-old daughter.
Gustavo Enrique Villalobos Carranza, 32, pleaded guilty June 22 in Multnomah County Circuit Court to second-degree murder, first-degree criminal mistreatment and unlawful use of a weapon. Charges of aggravated murder, first-degree murder and first-degree assault were dismissed as a part of a plea agreement, court records show.
He will be eligible for parole in 30 years, according to reporting from The Oregonian.
At the hearing, Villalobos Carranza said through an interpreter, “There is no punishment that will repair the damage I have done. I don’t deserve forgiveness,” according to The Oregonian.
An Oregon grand jury indicted Villalobos Carranza in November 2021. Court records identify his daughter as Brianna Villalobos Rodriguez.
He had moved out of the house he shared with his wife and daughter a few months prior to the slaying, court records indicate.
Vancouver police arrested Villalobos Carranza in the early morning of Oct. 31, 2021, after he agreed to turn himself in. He was subsequently extradited from Clark County to Multnomah County.
Vancouver police had responded at about 12:50 a.m. to a report of threats. The child’s mother said the father, identified by authorities as Villalobos Carranza, picked up Brianna on the evening of Oct. 30 and later called her making threats to harm the child, according to a bulletin from the police department.
The department issued an alert at about 2:30 a.m. requesting the public’s help in locating a vehicle involved in the alleged kidnapping — a silver SUV with Washington license plates.
Police canceled the alert when they contacted Villalobos Carranza. He was taken into custody at about 4:15 a.m. near Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard and 57th Avenue in central Vancouver.
His daughter was found with her throat cut in Portland, The Oregonian reported.
