Weather Eye: Enjoy next few days before hot weather begins

The weather will be kind of status quo today through Saturday with enough air off the ocean to help keep us in the 80s. Quite pleasant for most. The anticipated hot weather begins Monday and the Fourth of July but may not be hot as a firecracker, more like a sparkler is a way to say it with glee.

Currently, I believe we avoid 100-degree temperatures on the Fourth but low to mid-90s is hot in anyone’s book. It is still possible that we inch up toward the century mark but right now we hold back with some restraint. Things can change as we all know so stay tuned.

The real headline is that it will continue to be dry and get drier as we go through the weekend. I would expect as we lose some of the cooler marine influence, perhaps there may be some fire and possible firework restrictions go in place. Brisk north winds by the Fourth will lower humidity and most likely get us into a high fire danger status.

Keep things well-watered, be safe with flammables especially if out camping and especially on the Fourth with fireworks. OK, I’ll jump off my soapbox in that arena. If you desire cooler weather, head to the coast this holiday, it will be pleasant with highs in the upper 60s to mid-70s. Of course, it will be crowded. The beaches always attract people when it is sunny and in the hot category here in the valleys.

As we say goodbye to June on Friday, it will leave us here in Vancouver with only half the normal rainfall and a degree or so above average with the temperatures. Our warmer weather heading our way is a result of that extreme heat wave that is over the Southwest and in Texas. It is retrograding westward as hot high pressure often does and will give California, Southern and Eastern Oregon blistering high temperatures.

We hope the cool flow of air over southern British Columbia will keep that hot bubble of air suppressed enough to our south, otherwise we would soar to 100 degrees. Enjoy the next few days before the hot weather is upon us. Be safe.
