Access is open to popular Goose, Forlorn and Takhlakh lakes as the snow slowly melts and roads become passable in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
Highlights this week in the Forest Service’s recreation conditions update include:
- Goose Lake is accessible from Carson, Willard or Trout Lake. From the west, take Panther Creek road No. 65 to Four Corners, then left past Crest Camp to reach Goose Lake. Nearby Forlorn Lakes are accessible. Campers at Forlorn Lakes are urged to use bear-proof containers.
- Sleeping Beauty trail No. 37 is open and free of snow.
- Road No. 23 is open from Trout Lake to Randle and road No. 2329 is free of snow. Takhlakh Lake is accessible. The concessionaire at Takhlakh Lake is scheduled to open July 1. Killen Creek campground is accessible.
- Road No. 8040 is open to South Climb trailhead on the south side of Mount Adams. South Climb trail No. 183 is free of snow to about 6,200 feet elevation. Road No. 8225 is open to the Gotchen Creek Guard Station.
- Road No. 65 is open from the south to Thomas Lake trail No. 111 trailhead. Road No. 6507 is open connecting roads Nos. 65 and 30, although there are a lot of potholes.
- Road No. 90 is open to its end at the junction with road No. 23.
- South Prairie is draining rapidly. The dam has been installed at Mosquito Lake.
- Walupt Lake is accessible. The campground is scheduled to open on July 1.
- Calama Horse Camp is open, but portions of Cinnamon trail No. 204, Toutle trail No. 238 and Calama trail No. 242A are closed for safety reasons.
- The snow level in the Goat Rocks Wilderness is approximately 5,600 feet elevation.
