Work to replace two bridge expansion joints and a fractured floor beam on the Highway 433 Lewis and Clark Bridge connecting Longview and Rainier, Ore., will start on Monday.
Each evening one lane will be closed, and flaggers will alternate traffic across the bridge one direction at a time. Travelers should expect extra congestion at night, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Starting July 16, the bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic for up to eight days. During the closure, pedestrians, bicyclists and emergency responders will be able to cross the bridge, except during a 10-hour window when the floor beam is being replaced.
To set the new expansion joints in place, crews will pour concrete which needs four days to cure and strengthen, without movement and disturbance from traffic. The replacement of the floor beam also requires that there be no traffic on the bridge.
