Security guard dead after shooting at Portland hospital; suspect killed by police

Incident occurred Saturday at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in northwest Portland

A hospital security guard was killed Saturday in a shooting a Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland, and the suspect was later shot and killed by police in Gresham.

According the the Portland Police Bureau, officers responded to a threat at the medical center in Northwest Portland around 11 a.m. Once at the hospital, officers learned that a hospital security guard had been shot.

As the guard received treatment, officers began a search of the hospital when they learned the suspect had left the hospital.

The security guard later died of his wounds.

Police determined the suspect was in a vehicle. That car was stopped near NE 181st Avenue and NE Everett Street in Gresham.

During the stop, shots were fired by police, killing the suspect.

“This is a sad day for the staff at Legacy Health, and our hearts go out to the family, friends, and coworkers of the employees affected by today’s tragedy,” said Portland Chief Chuck Lovell, who responded to the scene. “By all accounts, hospital staff and law enforcement did great work responding to this incident, and I’m grateful for the coordinated efforts by all.”
