Weather Eye: There’s good news and bad news in weekend’s forecast

Are you getting tired of these gray skies? Well, I have good news and bad news for you.

First the bad news, I guess. We will have to endure more clouds, fog and showers between Friday and Saturday. The good news, if you like clear and sunny weather, is that we have that in the forecast for Sunday and Monday.

There is a little more bad news if you don’t care for the cold. The sunshine coming up later in the weekend and next week will look nice, but outside air temperatures during the day will reside in the 30s. Overnight lows will drop into the lower 20s, with upper teens possible in the outlying areas.

So, how about snow? As I have said over and over, we either have the cold and no moisture, or moisture but not enough cold. This go around, I believe that as rain showers taper off late Saturday, colder air will filter in over us, but the moisture will dry up.

We may get a few snow flurries as the weather system departs, but I’m not seeing anything remarkable as I write this late Wednesday. I know it will get cold.

We will warm up into the 40s later next week, and showers may return, but the air mass right now on extended forecast models appears too warm for snow.

Did you notice the barometer Wednesday? It reached 30.70 inches, which I haven’t seen in several years. That strong high pressure caused our stagnant air mass and kept us lowlanders in the fog and low clouds. It was crystal clear in the mountains and partly sunny along the coast — typical for winter.
