Prep roundup: Columbia River boys edge Hockinson, 70-69

Columbia River boys basketball stayed in the hunt for a district playoff berth by edging Hockinson 70-69 on Monday.

Aaron Hoey hit two free throws to put the visiting Rapids up 68-66 with 8.4 seconds to play.

Hockinson was fouled on the following possession but missed two free throws. Hoey grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He made two more free throws that proved vital when Hockinson’s Tyler Bunting hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Hezekiah Ponder scored 21 points to lead Columbia River (6-10, 6-6).

The Rapids are in fifth place in the 2A Greater St. Helens League, one-and-a-half games behind Woodland. The league gets four automatic district berths with the fifth-place team playing a pigtail play-in game.

Hockinson’s Tanner Williams scored 19 points, including a lay-in that tied the game at 66 with 46 seconds left.

Williams had 16 points in the second half as Hockinson (4-11, 2-10) erased a 39-23 halftime deficit.

Boys basketball

R.A. LONG 77, HUDSON’S BAY 33 — Cavin Holden scored 35 points to become R.A. Long’s all-time leading scorer as the Lumberjacks cruised to a 2A GSHL home win.

Holden entered Monday needing 32 points to match the career mark set by Adam Perry in 2004.

The 6-foot-2 guard, who led R.A. Long to fourth place at last year’s state tournament, now has 1,642 points.

MARK MORRIS 95, WOODLAND 71 — Braydon Olson scored 40 points, hitting nine of his team’s 12 3-pointers, as the Monarchs earned a 2A GSHL road win.

Olson hit five 3-pointers and scored 20 points in the first quarter as Mark Morris built a 29-15 lead.

Kobe Parlin added 23 points for the Monarchs (15-1, 12-0), who haven’t lost since their second game of the season.

Beau Swett scored 22 points and Justin Philpot added 19 points for Woodland (10-6, 7-4).
