Prairie High School graduate Cherita Daugherty was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week after two stellar games for Southern Utah.
The guard matched her career high with 28 points, going 16 for 16 from the foul line, in a 60-55 win over Sam Houston State on Friday.
Wednesday, Daugherty nearly had a triple-double as the Thunderbirds beat Utah Valley 70-66. She had 18 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.
Daugherty has scored no fewer than 18 points in her last six games, raising her scoring average to a team-best 15.7 points per game.
Daugherty, a graduate student, is also averaging 5.4 rebounds and is second on the team with 65 assists.
Southern Utah has started WAC play 5-0 after starting the season 4-7.
Peneueta fuels Sac State success
Heritage High graduate Katie Peneueta has played a big role in Sacramento State surging to the top of the Big Sky.
The sophomore guard has started all 16 games this year for the Hornets. She leads the team in 3-point shooting, going 41 for 94 (43.6 percent). She averages 9.1 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Sacramento State started Big Sky play 4-0 before falling to Northern Arizona on Saturday. The Hornets are 13-3 and had won their previous seven games.
Oberg has career high for Western Washington
Making her third start of the season, redshirt freshman guard Mason Oberg had a huge game Saturday for Western Washington.
The Union High grad scored a career-high 22 points, going 6 for 8 from 3-point range, in a 67-47 win over Western Oregon.
Oberg had been a key player off the bench, seeing action in 14 games and averaging 9.9 points.
Western Washington also has Prairie grad Brooke Walling, who leads the Vikings in scoring (14.6 points) and rebounding (10.1 points).
Western Washington is 13-1 this season and ranked No. 6 nationally in NCAA Division 2 after reaching the national championship game last season.
Bea go-to scorer for Idaho
Beyonce Bea continues to be on a scoring tear for University of Idaho women’s basketball.
Bea, who led Washougal to the Class 2A state championship in 2019, scored 27 points Monday in a 72-65 loss to Montana State.
The 6-foot-1 senior guard leads the team in scoring at 22.2 points per game.
Bea also leads Idaho in rebounding at 8.8 per game and field goal percentage at 46.8%. Monday, she shot 9 for 12 from the field and was 9 for 11 at the foul line.
Idaho (6-11, 2-4) is trying to right its course ahead of the midway point in the Big Sky season. The Vandals have lost four in a row, all on the road, after opening conference play with two home wins.
Osborn finds groove for Oregon Tech
Kam Osborn, a former All-Region player of the year for Prairie, has settled in as the starting point guard at Oregon Tech.
The sophomore has scored in double-figures eight of his last nine games. Friday, Osborn matched his career high of 18 points as Oregon Tech (8-9) lost to Lewis-Clark State 76-74.
Osborn leads the team with 59 assists and averages 9.9 points per game.
