Workers trying to locate source of leak that closed Mount Pleasant school

A water leak threw a wrench in the Mount Pleasant School District’s return from winter break this week, closing school Thursday and Friday as plumbers worked to fix the issue.

In a regular utilities checkup over the break last week, leaders at the one-building school district, just east of Washougal, learned that the water meter was running fast — an indication of a potential leak.

When staff and students came to school Tuesday, they noticed the building’s water pressure was dropping rapidly, as was a neighbor’s house next door that shares the same water system. By midday Wednesday, the problem was serious enough the district sent students home early.

A local leak detection company came Thursday morning and identified the source of the leak — or so it thought. After digging 25 feet down, it found nothing.

“We can’t even see where the water is coming up, it’s kind of a mystery right now,” Mount Pleasant Superintendent Cathy Lehmann said Thursday.

Workers returned Friday morning to continue the search; as of Friday afternoon, they remained stumped by the issue.

In the meantime, Lehmann said she and other leaders are looking for temporary alternatives for the school’s roughly 60 students.

Rather than lean on a temporary stint of remote-only learning, she said the school is hoping to bring in port-a-potties and mobile water stations for students and staff Monday so that school can remain in-person.

“We’re looking for any alternative solutions in case it’s not fixed by Monday,” Lehmann said. “We miss the kids, we want them back as soon as possible.”
