No one was injured Tuesday after police in Battle Ground negotiated with an armed man experiencing a mental health crisis.

Battle Ground police responded at about 9 a.m. to West Main Street and Northwest 20th Avenue for reports that a man inside a vehicle was armed with a knife and threatening to harm himself, according to a news release.

Officers evacuated nearby businesses, and they began negotiating with the man, the police department said. Medical personnel from Clark County First District 3 and AMR also staged nearby.

Shortly before noon, the police department said the situation resolved without any injuries.

“It takes incredible patience and keen communication skills when trying to provide aid to a person in crisis,” Battle Ground Police Chief Mike Fort said in a news release. “I am grateful for the Battle Ground police officers, as well as those from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Vancouver Police Department, who assisted in this incident.”

Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis can reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 24/7 by calling or texting 988 to be connected with a free licensed counselor. People can also reach mental health professions at the Clark County Crisis Line at 800-626-8137. In case of an emergency, call 911.
