Seton Catholic went scoreless for six minutes in the fourth quarter, allowing Seattle Academy to pull away for a 56-49 win in the Class 1A girls basketball state opening round Saturday at Bellevue College.
The Cougars’ season ends at 20-4.
The game was a tight, back-and-forth affair when Anna Mooney gave Seton Catholic a 44-43 on a 3-pointer with 6:30 left.
But the Cougars would not score again until Kasey Clifton’s basket with 30 seconds to play, and Seattle Academy scored nine unanswered points in the interim.
Seattle Academy post player Ila Giblin worked the inside for 26 points as the Cardinals dominated the rebounds, creating second-chance opportunities throughout the game.
Seton Catholic’s inside game was hurt when post Hailey Hammerstrom picked up three fouls in the first quarter and sat out the second quarter. Still the Cougars, behind seven points from Mooney in the quarter, trailed just 29-28 at halftime.
Hammerstrom returned to the game to start the second half and made the Cougars’ first two field goals of the third quarter.
However, Hammerstrom picked up her fourth and fifth fouls in quick succession and fouled out with about six minutes left in the third quarter.
Mooney hit a pair of 3-pointers to put Seton Catholic up 38-34, but the Cardinals rallied to tie the game 38-38 to enter the fourth quarter.
Mooney finished the game with 24 points – the only Seton player to score more than five points.
