Girls wrestling: Union’s Niah Cassidy, Virginia Thomason win 4A/3A girls regional titles

Lees leads Washougal at 2A/1A/B girls regional

Niah Cassidy and Virginia Thomason captured regional titles as the Union girls wrestling team qualified four wrestlers to next week’s state tournament during Saturday’s 4A/3A girls regional tournament in Kelso.

Cassidy captured the 125-pound class title with a 17-1 win over Shelby Enos-Cressy of Graham-Kapowsin, while Thomason won a 190 pounds with a pin of Tara Liebe of Kelso in the title match.

Union’s Janessa O’Connell (130) and Ahmiya Brox (190) also qualified for state.

Defending state champion Faith Tarrant of Prairie captured the title at 235 pounds, and Kelso’s Belia Victoriano won the 115-pound title.

WASHOUGAL SECOND at 2A/1A/B GIRLS REGIONAL: Kiersten Lees won the 130-pound division, leading Washougal to a runner-up finish at the 2A/1A/B Girls Regional at Shelton.

Washougal tallied 95 points to finish behind W.F. West’s 160 points.

Other local champions were Maritza Sanchez (105) of Hudson’s Bay; Kamiah Gaerlan (115) of Castle Rock, Teagan Trenda (125) of Hockinson and Jessica Polkinghorn (155) of Columbia-White Salmon.
