Weather Eye: After today’s rain, enjoy sun until more showers Friday

February is trying to get its act together and swing into winter mode with several storms on the horizon. However, after the storm today it won’t be all that robust. The weather system today will be the strongest of the week which will provide some good mountain snow to help our snowpack.

Today’s weather system, despite how hard it tries, should only dump a quarter- to one half-inch of rain in the local rain gauges around the county. Still lame for late winter. We have a short break Wednesday and part of Thursday when we will see some welcome sunbreaks at times. More light showers Friday through the weekend most likely.

I think we will see some cooler temperatures next week, as I mentioned last week, but to what extent remains to be seen. Still no alerts of real winter weather, which includes subfreezing temperatures, arctic cold and lowland snow. We will be in mid-February next week and after that, the odds of a good snow here in the city dwindle quickly.

Yeah, I know it snowed last April you say, but really that was an unusual event and didn’t last that long to cripple the county. We may escape the waning days of winter without a major winter weather event. Of course, we still remember that short duration of cold and ice prior to Christmas.

How are we doing? Our average mean temperature is pretty close to average but we are struggling in the rainfall department. As of 5 p.m. Monday, we have had 0.38 of an inch here in Vancouver, which is two-thirds of an inch below average. We will add some today but not enough to catch up.

Are you enjoying the longer hours of daylight now? The sun sets close to 5:30 p.m. and it is daylight until 6 p.m. if skies are somewhat clear. We are gaining at a fast pace now. Nature shows signs of emerging from the grasp of winter’s touch. Pussy willows are popping out on time, daffodils are rising toward the skies and other late winter foliage is showing its delicate but brilliant color. A promise of things to come.

Rainy early today, clearing and showers in the afternoon, so it should be easy to weather the storm.

We’ll chat on perhaps a sunny Thursday.
