Weather Eye: Chance of light rain or showers continues

The final full moon of 2023 was Tuesday this week and is known as the Cold Moon. Skies were partially clear when it rose around 4:30 p.m. and could be seen for a short while before clouds and showers moved in. I always try to catch a glimpse of the last moon of the year. Did you see it?

Moonstruck — there is a widespread popular belief that the weather changes with the moon, but no evidence has been found to support this belief. In variable weather, many changes may occur within a day or two on either side of the moon’s phases, which are separated by only seven days.

Current forecast charts however this go around, the weather will not be changing but will continue to be unsettled with a chance of light rain or showers. No big changes on the horizon like an extended dry period or freezing cold weather.

We did manage to pass the 8 inch mark with the rainfall so far this month here in Vancouver on Wednesday as a few drips and drizzle did the chore. Rainfall amounts for the remaining hours of 2023 will be on the light side and I doubt we will make it as far as 9 inches. The wettest December on record going back to 1896 in Vancouver was 16.03 inches in 2015.

Good friend Columbo

I read with interest the other day in this newspaper an article about the long lost Columbo, the weather dog. He and I became good friends 33 years ago this month writing my first Weather Eye column. How time flies!

There has been a ton of weather since that time with many records and eventful storms. I still have the Columbian clipping from 33 years ago showing Columbo and myself presenting the notice about the new column. I welcome his return even if for a while.

Although our weather going into the new year won’t be a total washout, it would be nice to see some sunshine. Steve Martin once said, “A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.”

What else can I say?
