Letter: Protect democracy, disqualify Trump

On Dec. 19, the Colorado Supreme Court announced that Donald Trump is not eligible to appear on the state’s 2024 ballot for president. He was disqualified from the ballot under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, ratified after the Civil War, which states that no person who participates in an insurrection against the U.S. government may hold public office again. This is a huge win for our communities and democracy.

Colorado is the first state to disqualify Trump from the 2024 presidential ballot, and if more states follow suit, we can ensure Trump will never be able to hold office again. Together, we can keep up the momentum by calling on secretaries of state — the officials who oversee the administration of elections at the state level — to follow the law by keeping Trump off the ballot and out of the White House, and we can send a clear, constitutionally grounded message that insurrectionists have no place in our democracy.

Will you take one minute to send an email to your secretary of state, urging them to follow Colorado’s lead and disqualify Trump from the ballot? We must prevent another Trump presidency to protect our freedoms and safeguard our democracy.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
