Letter: Court should rebuke Trump

By David Rogde, Vancouver
Published: December 26, 2023, 6:00am

I predict that the Supreme Court of the Unites States will disqualify Donald Trump from the ballot. Why? Because that is what is required of an “originalist” and “textualist” reading of our Constitution and the conduct of the former president. They may have extra impetus for this ruling in that Trump has made it clear that in a second term he will kick out the court’s leg of the three-legged stool that forms our republic’s constitutional form of government. Should the court act in a partisan manner and try to parse the meaning of the Constitution and Trump win election, they will fail in their duty and be rewarded by being for the first time in over 200-plus years a court that is not independent — they will forever have a boss!
