Letter: Timber sale can help prevent fires

By Bruce W. Dunn, VANCOUVER

I enjoyed the article about forest lands and the sale of timber for logging (“State agency, The Conservation Fund buy 20,000 acres of logging lands in Southwest Washington,” The Columbian, Dec. 19). I support logging in that it can make more habitat for elk and other animals to feed in. I also support logging in that it helps reduce wildfire fuels.

I have concerns about the overlapping of timber harvest and some stands of timber that are very susceptible to fire. I don’t have a solution but I have witnessed this on a fire I was on in northern Oregon by Mount Hood.

I hope that Washington can be ahead of the forest management game because we can lose thousands of acres of forest in days from a wildfire.
