KENNEWICK — What is a winter wonderland? If you go by the factors in the classic Christmas song, you might be looking for glistening snow and sleigh bells ringing. If you’re hosting a modern event, it might mean fun and festivities with impressive light displays.

A recent study by New York Travel Guides evaluated several factors to determine the coziest winter towns in America, perfect for a holiday getaway. The number one winter wonderland was right here in Washington, the charming Bavarian-inspired town of Leavenworth.

Best winter towns

The three main categories evaluated for the ranking were popularity in the winter among the general public and photographers, cozy winter weather and cozy activities/atmosphere. Leavenworth topped out at number one, including a perfect 100 in its individual score for cozy activities and atmosphere.

Following Leavenworth on the list are:

  • Breckenridge, Colo.
  • Stowe, Vt.
  • Vail, Colo.
  • Aspen, Colo.
  • Lake Placid, N.Y.
  • Portsmouth, N.H.
  • Frankenmuth, Mich.
  • Petoskey, Mich.
  • Stillwater, Minn.

So, what makes Leavenworth the coziest winter town in the country?

“The town offers many options for winter fun, including skiing, taking a sleigh ride, enjoying authentic Bavarian food, strolling the town’s beautiful streets, and Christmas shopping at unique stores,” states the study write-up.

You can also attend the Christmastown festival between Nov. 24 and Dec. 24, to enjoy live entertainment, gingerbread house displays and photos with Santa. Or, if you’d rather wait until things cool down, as Leavenworth is generally packed around Christmastime, the town Christmas lights stay up between Thanksgiving and February.

Enjoy food and fun at Front Street Park for most of the day during Christmastown or live music at the gazebo. Head to Festhalle for a warming station, free gift wrapping, kids’ activities, photo opportunities and more.

All of the yearlong recreation activities are still there during Christmastown, making the options seem endless if you’re making a short trip.
