Vern Schanilec said in a letter that our schools should teach the values of “original America” (Our Readers’ Views, Dec. 14). I wasn’t sure which ones he meant from the rest of his letter — remember, when our country was founded only white men with property could vote; it was legal to enslave people of color; women had no rights to their own money. I personally don’t want those values taught.
He goes on to excoriate “elitists of Harvard, Columbia, MIT, Penn, et al.” … I think he will find that almost all of our elected leaders and appointed judges went to universities or colleges that he would consider elitist — for example, Ron DeSantis, a noted conservative, attended Harvard and Yale.
He mentioned that “conservatives don’t hit the street with a response.” It was conservatives who attacked our Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, to try to overturn an election. Is he supporting them?
I am sorry Mr. Schanilec has so much anger in his heart to so many of his fellow citizens. I hope someday he finds peace.
