LEAVENWORTH — Visitors from around the globe converge upon Leavenworth each year to take the sights, sounds, taste and smells that the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm offers, including the unique experience of being able to get up close and personal with a herd of friendly reindeer.

The farm features Belgian draft horses, chickens, turkeys, ponies and pigs as well as a gift shop in a barn built in 1907. The concession stand serves hot cocoa and cider as well as Alaskan reindeer sausage and Norwegian Potato Lefse and other seasonal treats.

Ever wondered why Santa’s reindeer were up on the rooftop going “click, click, click?” The farm’s safety and education lesson explains that and other key information before visitors enter the enclosure to hand feed the reindeer. Cupid’s Corner is available for guest under 55 inches tall, guests with mobility constraints or special needs that need a safe option to view the herd.

And the farm recently announced plans to build a geodesic dome.

“We are building the west coast’s largest geodesic projection dome featuring Northern Lights shows and a chance to encounter reindeer from all over the world in 360 projection, with beautiful music and special effects,” the farm announced on its website. “The dome is on-site now, and we are waiting on final permits to begin construction. The Dome Experience will be included with every reindeer farm visit once it is operational.”

In November, a 6-month-old male reindeer named Cupid spent 17 days at Washington State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital having surgery to repair a gastrointestinal blockage. Eventually Noelle and Tinkerbelle were transported to WSU to provide transfusions. All three are doing well and at the farm for visiting.
