Letter: Freedom of expression is honored

Mr. Schanilec exposes his ignorance of the vast populations of both middle America and the two coasts (“Teach values of original America,” Our Readers’ Views, Dec. 14). Highly esteemed institutions of higher education already exist all over middle America, as well as those on both coasts. Freedom of expression is honored, but acts of violence, slander and libel  are not tolerated on any campus. Organized peaceful protests are now occurring on many campuses; seminars and discussions are being held, with both professors and students involved. Informed discourse continues as it always has; that is what institutions of higher education are all about, all over the country.

The congresswoman who demanded that the presidents of three colleges answer yes or no to calls for genocide should turn her question to Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and their minions. The actions of these two autocrats and the sycophants who support them speak louder than words.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
