Letter: Keep church and state separate

By Howard Meharg, VANCOUVER

I responded enthusiastically to the letter from Linda Wallers (“Accept differences of fellow humans,” Our Readers’ Views, Dec. 12), who wrapped it up so well with “Sadly, some people need to have some invisible superior authority figure looking over their shoulder for them to behave civilly, rather than simply being kind, generous, respectful, and accepting the differences of their fellow human beings because it is moral and ethical.”

The principles she names are precisely those that should guide lawmaking and fairness in our legal system.

Our Founding Fathers very wisely attempted to form a government that allowed for all citizens to practice any and all religions. Freedom to worship and to adhere to any religion is foundational to these founders. But to make this a “Christian nation” and to embed specific religious tenets from any such source into our form of government sets a precedent that is dangerous to this nation as well as being the antithesis of what was intended.

The values Waller lists are fundamental. Yes, they’re found in all major religions, but separation of church and state is undeniably fundamental, too.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
