Recent statements from former President Donald Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social, regarding the Affordable Care Act demand our attention and scrutiny. Despite the ACA debate seemingly settled in 2017, Trump’s post declaring he will “never give up on the fight” to repeal it and that he is “seriously looking at alternatives” is cause for concern.
Let’s not forget that the ACA debate concluded years ago, after months of deafening constituent pressure from around the country on Republican members of Congress. It significantly contributed to Democrats’ wins in 2018. The Wall Street Journal recently reported it as a “largely settled” matter. Further, Trump has never had a plan and he doesn’t today.
Trump’s Truth Social post should be a chilling reminder of just how much is at stake in November for the 40 million Americans who have coverage under the ACA and the millions more who are protected from being denied care for their pre-existing conditions.
The message from voters to Donald Trump should be clear, just like it was in 2017: hands off our health care.
