Letter: Safe at home

By Troy Haliwell, Vancouver
Published: December 16, 2023, 6:00am

I read about the “decline” of Oregon in your editorial (“Addressing Portland’s problems will reverberate,” In Our View, Dec. 13), then saw an article about broken windows in Uptown Village (“Vancouver businesses’ windows broken during spate of vandalism,” The Columbian, Dec. 12).

I rarely cross the Columbia River anymore because of all the crime in Portland in the media, and now am starting to question doing the 10 miles each way to downtown/Uptown Vancouver.

All are reasons I turn more and more to online shopping. I recognize the negative impact on local business, but when the vandals and thieves take over the streets, it makes more sense to stay safe at home behind the screen.
