Letter: Keep McGillivray at four lanes

By Jim McConnell, VANCOUVER
Published: December 15, 2023, 6:00am

At two neighborhood meetings, we handed out a survey about the city’s plan for McGillivray Boulevard. Out of the 57 filling out the survey, 51 (89 percent) wanted to keep McGillivray two lanes each way. The transportation commission’s purpose seems to be forcing people out of their cars, while they communicate about safety.

Information to consider:

  • In most cities under 1 million people, it costs more to transport a person 10 miles by public transportation than by car. Nonriding taxpayers foot most of the bill for public transportation.
  • It also creates about as much CO2 emissions per person for public transportation as for cars when including manufacturing, maintenance, government infrastructure, and fuel — whether gasoline or electricity generation — costs.

Who should make this decision? The thousands of people living in Cascade Park and/or those who drive on McGillivray or those in power who do not live in Cascade Park, but want to force their political agenda on everyone else?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
