Letter: Accept differences of fellow humans

Carrie Ross (“Follow 10 Commandments,” Our Reader’s Views, Dec. 6) decried the absence of an Abrahamic God in schools and public life. Is she as accepting of Jewish or Islamic prayers in place of Christian prayers in schools and public life, too? Christianity is not the only Abrahamic religion.

I submit that one Abrahamic religion, Christianity, contributes to problems by the insistence of some that only their language, their truth, and their interpretations of religious and civil laws are valid. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Protestants fled Europe for the New World to escape religious dictatorships/theocracies. Now, they want to establish a 21st century American theocracy, excluding a majority of the American citizens of the U.S. who worship differently. The greatest asset of this multicultural, multilingual and multireligious country is the general acceptance and inclusion of everyone regardless of language, culture, faith, color, etc.

Sadly, some people need to have some invisible superior authority figure looking over their shoulder for them to behave civilly rather than simply being kind, generous, respectful, and accepting the differences of their fellow human beings because it is both moral and ethical.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
