In the midst of the heat wave sweeping Southwest Washington, forest fire managers have issued restrictions on campfires, smoking and similar activities in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
All open fires, including campfires, charcoal or briquette fires, are prohibited in campgrounds, trails or roads within the national forest.
Portable cooking stoves, lanterns and heating devices such as propane are allowed if they can be instantly switched off.
Smoking in non-designated areas is also prohibited. Violators may face fines up to $5,000.
“The forest has seen a significant increase in human-caused wildfires compared to previous years,” Dirk Shupe, Fire Management Staff Officer for the forest, said in a news release. “Any wildfire start presents a danger to firefighter safety, public safety, and personal property. We want to minimize that risk by asking everyone to do their part.”
