Weather Eye: Temps could top 100, heat expected to linger for days

What a summer we have been having so far. Those 90-degree days earlier in summer are distant memories. I’m afraid the memories will come back as we swelter in the first 100-degree heat of the summer on Sunday.

We may reach 100 degrees or higher Sunday through Wednesday. Excessive heat warnings and heat advisories have been issued for the western valleys excluding the immediate coastal areas. A fire weather warning is likely due to low humidity and gusty winds. It will be a tinder box next week, so be cautious.

Meanwhile, I enjoyed my day at the Clark County Fair on Thursday with perhaps the best weather one could hope for. Cool air and clouds were left behind after the weak cold front passed through our area Wednesday. Vancouver made it to 79 Thursday, breaking our stretch of days with highs in the 80s.

Sunday, unfortunately, will be a hot one at the fair, with afternoon temperatures well into the 90s.

With this heat wave, the overnight low temperatures will be near 70 in Vancouver and in the mid- to upper 60s in the urban areas. Those low temperatures will be brief, with quick warming after sunrise. It will linger in the 80s close to midnight Monday and Tuesday.

There are some forecast models that indicate we have a chance to surpass 100 degrees for three or four days and even reach 105 degrees. I’m sure if we reach 100 degrees, we will certainly inch up a few degrees above that. A high of 103 or 104 wouldn’t surprise me.
