Weather Eye: Don’t want to visit the fair in the heat? Wait until next week

After flirting with 90 degrees the first three days of the month, we were expected to do likewise on Friday. We will be around 90 degrees today and Sunday.

Cloudiness increased from the east Friday as that heat dome over the Southwest was shoving monsoonal moisture into our area. Thunderstorms were expected east of the Cascades, which is not good news, but some rainfall was expected as well.

Higher humidity is present with our warm temperatures this weekend. If you don’t want to visit the fair in the heat, then wait: Anytime next week will be good. Early in the week, temperatures will be lower and clouds will increase. There will be a 20 percent chance of light showers to settle the dust. But then we’ll warm back up, possibly well into the 90s on the last day of the fair and beyond.

This week’s clear skies made for a great viewing of the full sturgeon moon. We’ll have another opportunity for a brilliant appearance of a full moon on Aug. 30, the closest supermoon of the year.

It may be the dog days of summer, but subtle changes are taking place as the season begins its downhill movement. It is getting darker earlier in the evening. The crickets are in their prime, and squirrels are gathering their stashes for the winter.

The vine maples in the woodlands are turning brilliant red and orange, signaling that summer is “well-seasoned.” The stores have back-to-school gear on display and summer apparel on clearance. Halloween candy won’t be far behind. I wish summer would linger a bit longer.
