Clark County officials on Thursday kickstarted a project to thin roughly 30 percent of forest on Spud Mountain as a part of the county’s forest stewardship plan.

Staff began preparing permit proposals, reaching out to residents and surveying the property, which sits north of Washougal and east of Hockinson. Forest thinning auctions will occur in the winter, followed by thinning operations as soon as spring 2024 and project completion later that year.

The Clark County Council will review a request for timber sale approval in the coming months.

Proceeds from the auctions will be used for maintenance across Clark County’s Legacy Lands program, which oversees land deemed valuable for its habitat, scenic corridors and recreational opportunities. The Spud Mountain project area is included in the program.
