A woman and her pet died Thursday evening after a vehicle crashed into a house at 2607 Unander Ave. in west Vancouver. Police said a speeding, impaired driver is suspected of causing the crash.

The crash was reported at 6:40 p.m. According to Vancouver police and emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian, a driver was speeding down Fourth Plain Boulevard, hit a median curb near the intersection of Fruit Valley Road, crashed through a back fence and into the home.

Firefighters and the department’s heavy/technical rescue team arrived to shore up the house so the victims could be extricated. A woman and a family pet were declared dead at the scene. Two other people who lived in the house were displaced.

The driver, whose name has yet to be released, was transported to an area hospital for evaluation of injuries, which police said did not appear to be life-threatening.

Pending charges for the driver, once released from the hospital, include DUI and vehicular homicide, according to police.

In all, 17 firefighters and a chaplain were dispatched to the scene, in addition to police.
