Weather Eye: This week, we’ll return to seasonal temperatures

Well, what can I say? Earlier, we were struggling to make it in the 50s. Then we speculated about getting up to normal in the mid-60s. Then we wondered if we could manage a 70-degree high temperature. And now we are in the 80s. Reminds me of being in the Millennium Falcon and going into hyperdrive.

On Thursday, we reached 80 degrees, our first 80-degree high since Oct. 16, 2022. Not to be outdone, Friday’s high broke the old record of 87 degrees, set way back in 1926, with an outstanding 88-degree high. That, my friends, is almost in the hot category. It was for me, but it came and went so quickly that I had no time to adjust. It was even in the mid-80s along the coast.

Cooler air off the ocean seeped inland Saturday and kept us in the low 80s, which is still some 20 degrees above average. Today, we adjust back to seasonal temperatures in the 60s.

The upcoming week looks rather interesting. We have a pesky low spinning off to our southwest, and as the week wears on and it begins its eastward movement, we could see thunderstorm activity move up the Cascades to our area.

Meanwhile, highs will inch back into the 70s, and we risk having a thunderstorm drift over the western valleys. Seems early in the season for that; it’s more of a summer-type pattern.

Regardless, I’ll have to broad-brush the weather forecast Monday through Friday, with highs rising above normal and a chance of showers each day this week. Most likely we’ll see nothing, but we can’t rule out something developing. You know how we hate those pesky upper-level, low-pressure systems. They’re so difficult to predict, as they are usually cut off from the main flow of things and enjoy wandering.

Unless we get measurable precipitation today from drizzle or sprinkles, the monthly total of 5.18 inches as of 5 p.m. Saturday here in Vancouver will stand. Our normal rainfall is 2.77 inches.

The warm weather last week helped boost the monthly average temperature, but as of Saturday, it was still 2 degrees below normal.

Welcome to the month of May on Monday. We’ll chat on Tuesday.
