100 years ago
The City Beautiful club held its last meeting of the season on April 25, 1923, with a plan to reconvene in the fall. Mrs. Joseph Roane hosted the meeting at her house, where members discussed social and business matters. The 2-year-old group, which encouraged planting flowers and shrubs throughout the city, reported it had arranged “four bulb, flower, plant and shrub exchanges” since it began.
75 years ago
Mrs. Hulda Klager announced the dates of the annual “lilac week” on her 3 acres in Woodland. In a story on April 23, 1948, Klager said she believed the lilacs would be in bloom in the first week of May. The local garden club arranged the special “open house” for visitors “craving a glimpse of the locally well-known” grounds.
50 years ago
The Gardenettes Garden Club hosted its annual spring flower show, with the theme “April Fantasies,” on April 25, 1973, at East Mill Plain School. The show featured three divisions: horticulture, decorative and junior. Unfortunately, the paper didn’t report who took home the gold in the “April Fantasies” festivities.
