Spring warmup is on as we surpass the average high of 64 degrees today through Saturday, with sunny skies except for some high clouds at times.
By the end of the week, before we cool off again, offshore winds will help us warm into the 80s for the first time this year. We could hit 80 on Thursday and closer to 85 degrees with those easterly winds on Friday.
Saturday will be close to 80 degrees and Sunday clouds should increase along with an onshore flow of air off the ocean, which will cool us off with below-average highs through Tuesday. Back in the 50s? That will feel chilly after 80 degrees, don’t you think?
Everyone will likely have a good dose of spring fever as the week wears on, and it may be difficult for the kids in classrooms looking out the window. But with longer hours of daylight and mild evenings, there will be plenty of time to play.
Despite snow on the foothills, I will set out some annuals later this week. They have outgrown their cavern in the garage.
We have only had two days this month with highs in the 60s and that was 61 degrees on April 14 and 66 degrees on April 22. This has been a cold month, one for the record books for sure.
This rise in temperatures will temper the average mean temperature that is running 4 degrees below normal.
With highs reaching 80 degrees and higher, could we break high temperature records? Locally, the record high for Thursday is 90 degrees set in 1926, and Friday it’s 87 degrees, also set in 1926. I wasn’t around in 1926 but Vancouver had a good run of warm weather from April 24 through April 28. And that was after a record low of 34 degrees set the day before on April 23. However in 1992, the record low dropped to 30 degrees.
The old saying goes that April showers bring forth May flowers, which is usually the case as the warmth of the season evolves. Some of those flowers may delay their blooms due to the colder-than-average weather this month.
Enjoy the sunshine and shirtsleeve weather, and we’ll chat on Thursday.
