‘Nurse Navigators’ to help 911 dispatchers in Clark County

Clark County residents who call 911 for nonurgent medical services after May 16 will be connected with the Nurse Navigation Program for help finding the best treatment.

The 911 Nurse Navigators are state-licensed nurses with experience in emergency nursing, according to a Vancouver news release. They are trained to triage callers and can connect people with clinics, transportation and telehealth providers who can give care and prescribe medication, if necessary. The program does not require callers to have medical insurance.

The program is a partnership between the Vancouver Fire Department, AMR and Clark County emergency medical services. Each year, about 14,000 of Clark County’s 58,000 medical-related calls to 911 are considered nonemergency, the city said.

People who call 911 for an urgent medical problem will not see a change in their access to emergency services, the news release states. Vancouver encourages people to contact their primary care providers for medical advice, appointments and prescription refills.

People can learn more about the program at cityofvancouver.us/nursenavigation or call 360-750-4679 ext. 64601.
