The Nez Perce Indian Nation will present the Chief Redheart memorial ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

The annual ceremony pays tribute to “tribal ideals, honors tribal ancestors and helps heal old wounds,” a press release said.

During the Nez Perce War of 1877, 33 members of Chief Redheart’s band were captured and held at Fort Vancouver for eight months.

The two-hour ceremony will include singing, speeches, a drum circle and recognition of U.S. veterans. The Nez Perce Nation, the city of Vancouver, the Community Military Appreciation Committee and other organizations are co-hosting the event.

Organizers encourage the public to bring blankets or lawn chairs, and to park on Fifth Street.
