Prep highlights: Fast-starting Ridgefield softball rolls past Columbia River

Maizy Whitlow and Madison Walker each hit home runs as part of a 10-run first inning that propelled the Ridgefield softball team to a 19-6 win over Columbia River on Thursday at VGSA.

After Walker put Ridgefield up 2-0 on a two-run single, Whitlow followed with a two-run home run to center.

The Spudders (7-0, 4-0 2A Greater St. Helens League) would bat around in the inning, and Walker capped the scoring with a three-run home run to right field.

Whitlow finished by going 4 for 5 with two runs and three RBI. Mallory Vancleave went 3 for 4 with three RBI, Kaylen Wingerd and Elizabeth Peery both went 3 for 5 with three runs each and Makayla Ferguson was 3 for 4 with three runs and two doubles.

The Spudders play at Skyview on Friday in a non-league showdown of local powers.

Stars of the day

  • Annika Yeh, Mountain View girls golf, shot a 1-over-par 35, which was also her Stableford score, to claim medalist honors in the Thunder’s win over Skyview at Tri-Mountain. She started with two bogeys then made par on the next six holes and finished with a birdie.
  • Dillon Kirksey, Ridgefield baseball, went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a double in a 5-3 win over Washougal as the Spudders improved to 5-1 in 2A GSHL play.
  • Zach Ziebell, Columbia River baseball, allowed two hits and two walks over seven innings as the Rapids beat Hockinson 7-2.
  • Zaden Hoover, Kelso baseball, went 3 for 5 with two RBI in a 10-3 win over Mountain View.
  • Cole Cuypers, Evergreen baseball, allowed three hits and two walks, striking out seven over six innings in a 14-4 win over Heritage. He also went 2 for 4 at the plate and stole three bases.
  • Jake Swenson, Camas baseball, had 11 strikeouts over six innings, allowing five hits and walking none, in a 4-3 win over Battle Ground as the Papermakers swept a three-game series against the Tigers.
  • Evan McGuire, Union baseball, pitched seven innings, striking out nine and allowing five hits, while also going 3 for 4 with a double as the Titans beat Skyview 5-2 in the opening game of a doubleheader.
  • Derek Tarnoski, King’s Way Christian baseball, went 2 for 2 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI in a 16-2 win over Stevenson.
  • Hallie Watson, Mark Morris softball, went 2 for 3 with a home run, a triple and six RBI in a 14-2 win over Evergreen.
  • Kayla Lester, Skyview softball, went 2 for 2 with two RBI in a 7-3 win over Barlow (Ore.).
  • Jadyn Terry, R.A. Long softball, went 3 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBI in a 8-3 win over Hudson’s Bay. She also had 11 strikeouts over seven innings, allowing five hits.
  • McKinley Ermshar, Union softball, had 16 strikeouts over seven innings, allowing two hits and one walk in a 6-0 win over Prairie. She also went 2 for 3 with three RBI.
  • Stephen Hammergren, Mark Morris baseball, had 14 strikeouts over seven innings, allowing three hits in a 5-3 win over R.A Long.
  • Brady Angelo, Seton Catholic boys soccer, had a goal and two assists in a 6-0 win over Stevenson.
  • Alex Harris, Columbia River boys soccer, scored four goals in a 5-0 win over Hudson’s Bay.
  • Koby Johnson, Washougal boys soccer, scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Fort Vancouver.
  • Noah Sarot-Evans and Jackson Radi, Mountain View boys soccer, each scored in the second half as the Thunder rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to beat Evergreen 2-1.
