Is that snow in Clark County? Sort of

Is snow in April the new normal in Clark County? Maybe.

Big wet flakes of snow started falling in east Vancouver and the Orchards area before 7 a.m. Wednesday, piling up on grass and landscaping. A wintry mix was falling in Felida with snowflakes not surviving contact with the ground. Snow dusted backyards and intersections all over the county. By 8 a.m. a lot of the wintry mix had turned to rain.

“As expected, this has certainly been an interesting night shift,” the National Weather Service in Portland said on the website in the Area Forecast Discussion (the agency described the discussion as a “nerdy weather blog” on Twitter). With temps in the mid- to high-30s, NWS said it was too warm for snow to stick. The high is expected to be in the low 50s with lows in the 30s overnight.

“A wet and cool weather pattern will persist across the Pacific Northwest for much of the next week with a break in the wet weather most likely to occur Friday into Saturday,” NWS Portland said.

Some Southwest Washington school districts announced delays or schedule changes later in the morning. In Battle Ground, schools start one-hour late on Wednesdays but some busses are on snow routes. Check www.columbian.com/school-closures/ for updates and more details.

Snow in April isn’t unprecedented. Just over a year ago — April 11, 2022 — areas throughout Clark County received close to 7 inches of snow. It was the first recorded measurable snow fall at the Portland Airport in April, according to the service’s Twitter page.
